EXPEDITION ‘NORTH POLE’ AND GLOBAL CLASSIFICATION OF ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION

On May 21, 1937, the polar air expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences landed in the area of the North Pole and placed the scientific station «North Pole» on the drifting ice. The station’s head was Ivan Dmitrievich Papanin that is why the station team members began to be called Papanintsy (followers of Papanin). The team included three other members: Ernst Teodorovich Krenkel (radio operator), Pyotr Petrovich Shirshov (hydrobiologist, hydrologist and oceanologist) and Yevgeny Konstantinovich Fyodorov (astronomer, magnetologist, geophysicist and meteorologist). During nine months of stay on the ice floe Papanintsy proved not only the possibility of living in severe arctic conditions, but also of fruitful work in such type of climate. The weight of the scientific notebooks of the expedition with records of valuable observations of ocean depths, ground composition, drift direction and velocity, and meteorological parameters made up 52 kg. The dog by the nickname Vesioly, Chukchi Shepherd, was guarding the polar
explorers’ camp against polar bears. Boris Livovich Dzerdzeevsky, the main synoptic of the expedition provided Papanintsy with the weather forecasts from the time of their departure from Moscow on March 22, 1937 until his return to Leningrad, on February 19, 1938. During his work with Papanintsy, Boris Livovich made a discovery: at the North Pole there is not always an anticyclone, as it was believed earlier. There are frequent cyclones with storm winds and dense clouds, because of what he could not recommend the departure of airplanes with cargo on board for the polar station. Subsequently, on the basis of these observations, he created a classification of the atmospheric circulation of the Northern Hemisphere, based on the state of the atmosphere in the Arctic. Later, on the same basis, a global air circulation classification was created.
Keywords: Arctic, North Pole, Papaninitsy, Dzerdzeevskii, global classification of atmospheric circulation.
